What is a coronavirus?

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that may cause disease in animals and humans. A number of coronaviruses are known to cause respiratory infections in humans, ranging in severity from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The recently discovered coronavirus causes coronavirus disease COVID-19.

What is COVID-19?

COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the recently discovered coronavirus. There was no knowledge of the existence of this new virus and disease before the outbreak broke out in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019.

What are the symptoms of Covid-19?

The most common symptoms of Covid-19 are fever, fatigue, and dry cough. Some patients may experience aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat, or diarrhea. These symptoms are usually mild and begin gradually. Some people become infected without showing any symptoms and without feeling sick. How does COVID-19 spread?

People can get COVID-19 from other people who have the virus. The disease can spread from person to person through small droplets that are spread from the nose or mouth when a person with COVID-19 coughs or sneezes. These droplets fall on objects and surfaces around the person. Other people can then become infected with COVID-19 by touching these objects or surfaces and then touching their eyes, nose or mouth. Protective measures for everyone

Keep up to date with the latest information on the COVID-19 outbreak available on the WHO website and from your national and local public health authority. Many countries in the world have recorded cases of COVID-19, and many have experienced outbreaks. The relevant authorities in China and some other countries have succeeded in slowing the spread of outbreaks or stopping them completely. Since it is difficult to predict the development of the situation, please check regularly for the latest news.

You can reduce the possibility of contracting or spreading COVID-19 by taking some simple precautions:

  • Clean your hands well regularly with an alcohol-based hand rub or by washing them with soap and water.
    • Why? Cleaning your hands with soap and water or rubbing them with an alcohol-based sanitizer will kill viruses that may be on your hands.

What are my chances of getting COVID-19

Should I be worried about getting COVID-19?

Illness caused by infection with the new coronavirus (COVID-19) is generally mild, especially in children and young people. However, it can cause serious illness, with about 1 in 5 people with this disease needing hospital care. So, it's natural for people to feel anxious about how the COVID-19 outbreak will affect them and their loved ones.

We can channel our anxiety right into actions to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our communities. The most important of these measures is washing hands regularly and extensively and following good respiratory hygiene practices. Secondly, review and adhere to the advice of local health authorities, including restrictions that may be imposed on travel, movement and gatherings.

Who is at risk for severe illness?

We are still learning about how COVID-19 affects people, however it appears that older people and people with pre-existing medical conditions (such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes) are more likely to develop severe illness.

Are antibiotics effective in preventing or treating COVID-19?

No. Antibiotics do not eliminate viruses, they only eliminate bacterial infections. Since COVID-19 is caused by a virus, antibiotics do not kill it. Antibiotics should not be used to prevent or treat COVID-19. They should only be used according to your doctor's instructions to treat bacterial infections.

Is COVID-19 the same as SARS?

No. The virus that causes COVID-19 and the virus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) are genetically related, but they are different. SARS is more deadly than Covid-19, but much less contagious. Nowhere in the world has there been a SARS outbreak since 2003.

Should I wear a mask to protect myself?

Only wear a mask if you have symptoms of COVID-19 (especially a cough) or if you are caring for someone who may have COVID-19. You can only use a single-use mask once. But if you are not sick or if you are caring for a sick person, you will have wasted a mask unnecessarily. Given the global shortage of masks, the Organization urges people to use them wisely.

How to put on, use, remove and dispose of a mask

1- Remember that the use of a mask should be limited to health workers, caregivers and people with respiratory symptoms such as fever and cough.

2- Before touching the mask, clean your hands by rubbing them with an alcohol-based sanitizer or washing them with soap and water.

3- Hold the mask and check it to make sure it is not torn or damaged. Perforated.

4- Locate the upper end of the mask (the location of the metal strip).

5- Make sure that the correct side of the mask is facing outward (the colored side).

6- Place the mask on your face. Press the metal strip or the reinforced end of the mask to form the shape of your nose.

How long is the incubation period for COVID-19?

The term “incubation period” refers to the time from infection with the virus to the onset of symptoms of the disease. Most estimates of the incubation period for COVID-19 range between one and 14 days, and it usually lasts five days. These estimates will be updated as more data becomes available.

Can COVID-19 be transmitted to humans from an animal source?

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses common among bats and animals. In rare cases, people become infected with these viruses, which they then transmit to others. Examples of this include the coronavirus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), which was linked to civet cats, and the coronavirus that causes Middle East respiratory syndrome, which was transmitted by camels. The potential animal sources of Covid-19 have not yet been confirmed.

التدابير التالية غير فعّالة في مواجهة مرض كوفيد-19 بل قد تكون ضارة:

  • التدخين
  • استخدام كمامات متعددة
  • تعاطي المضادات الحيوية
  • هل توجد أي أدوية أو علاجات يمكنها الوقاية من مرض كوفيد-19 أو علاجه؟

في جميع الأحوال، إذا كنت مصاباً بالحمى والسعال وصعوبة التنفس، التمس الرعاية الطبية مبكراً من أجل الحد من مخاطر الإصابة بعدوى أشد وطأة، وتأكد من إطلاع مقدم الرعاية الصحية على أي أماكن سافرت إليها في الآونة الأخيرة.
